The Strade Bianche

The peculiarity of this race is in fact the opportunity of seeing the ProS riding a roadbike on unpaved dusty roads, called here “Strade Bianche”.

This makes the event very unpredictable and spectacular to watch at the same time.

Since the first moment I realize how many Belgian, Dutch and Spanish tourists are visiting today and spectating this event, as well a massive amount of other cyclists browsing along and before the race on the course and near roads, such an incredible vibe.

A lot of waiting and pondering about which is the best spot where to stop to capture these guys passing and in a matter of 30 seconds the peloton has already approached and passed.

From this moment I realize how much wind there is today and how important for me is to position repaired from it, and from all the dust created by bikes and cars.

I planned this day race quite well and I am moving immediately to another spot where I know I would be able to take some nice photos.

Probably the first real classic pro race of the Year. What was up to few years ago only a granfondo sponsored by a local Bank, now has become one of the most interesting races for the Pro peloton attracting tourists from all over the world.

It is the beginning of March here in Tuscany, a sunny but cold day. The race as always starts in Siena, developing through our spectacular countryside and finishing again in Siena with the last climb leading right into Piazza del Campo, the famous square where The Palio (a horse race) twice a year takes place.

I arrive with my van and my gravel bike early in the morning and decide to park a bit south of the City. I will miss the start but I will be able to head straight to one of the best gravel segment of the whole course.

In the mean time, while I am connecting from one place to another, I do some extra scouting for my guided rides and tours. For those, I try to find not so popular routes, very quiet and scenic, more into the countryside.

All great opportunities for some gravel biking.

What else to say, after a lot of wind and dry lips, the day has come to an end.

I spectated one of the most interesting races of the last years, I took some close up shots to these legends, I connected with some likeminded people along the course and coming back with great memories, as always what really matter the most!
